Installing R and RStudio
To participate in the workshop, you must install R Studio before arriving.
⚠️ IT Permissions & Installation Support
If you are using a government, university, or employer-issued laptop, you may need IT authorization to install software.
Please request any necessary permissions well in advance of the workshop to avoid delays.
If you encounter any issues installing QGIS, please contact the instructor before the workshop so we can troubleshoot in advance.
Software:
This workshop uses the R scripting language and the RStudio software application. RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) designed to support multiple languages, including both R and Python. For more information visit the RStudio User Guide
Prior to the Workshop, you will need to install or update R and RStudio.
Current Version Information (July 27, 2026):
- The latest release is R 4.6.1.
- The latest release is RStudio revision 43.
Please install the appropriate version for your operating system using the guidance below.
R
- Go to: CRAN’s R page
- Select the link for macOS or Windows. ⚠️ Mac Users will be provided with an option to download an Intel or Silicon version. Most newer Macs will use the Silicon version.
RStudio
- Go to: RStudio Install
- Select the link for macOS or Windows.
- Once downloaded, install the software
Verify Installation
Before arriving at the workshop:
- Restart your computer after installing the software to ensure that R has started
- Open RStudio.
- Confirm it launches without errors.
- Verify the version number under Help → About.
